The Austrian Rarities Committee of BirdLife Austria - AFK

The main task of the Austrian Rarities Committee (AFK - Avifaunistische Kommission) is the collection, assessment und procession of observations of rare bird species in Austria. In the course of its faunistic work it also collects first breeding records of rare species. Besides this other activities include:

* publication of rare bird reports in the magazine Egretta
* Updating of the Austrian bird list

Records of unusual bird sightings are assessed on the basis of submitted descriptions. With the help of these it is evaluated if the identification is correct and the documenation sufficient for further scientific use of the records. Incoming reports are being copied and sent out to the members of the committee. Twice a year a meeting at the bird collection of the Museum of Natural History in Vienna takes place where differences in the evaluation of the records are discussed and proofs like photographs, videos, sound recordings are checked.
Accepted records can be published, whereas undocumented resp. not-accepted records do not suffice the minimum standards for further scientific consideration. The further use of such records can distort the true patterns of occurrence of rare birds resp. of interesting developments (like eg. colonisation).

The committee is active since the late 1970ties, additionally older (and recent) records have been worked up by the founder of the committee, Dr. Kurt Bauer, during the preparation of the handbook "Handbuch der Vögel Mitteleuropas". The work of the committee is independent and on a voluntary basis. It is supported by BirdLife Austria and the bird collection of the Museum of Natural History in Vienna.
The committee is a memeber of the Association of European Rarities Committees (AERC) and its work is in accordance with the guidelines of AERC.

Each record of a rare bird should be sent to the committee, making use of the recording form, if possible supplemented by photos, sound recordings or other proofing materials.
